Large fire threatens Ventura County communities 101 Freeway closed hundreds evacuated

The Hill fire broke out Thursday afternoon forcing evacuations near Camarillo

An emergency evacuation order was issued for several neighborhoods west of Los Angeles as firefighters frantically fought back the Woolsey Fire.

The Camarillo-area fire, dubbed the Hill Fire, was fed by 25- to 30-mph winds that pushed flames across Highway 101 and toward Pacific Coast Highway, Ventura County Firespokesman Mike Lindbery said Thursday night.

The Woolsey blaze also struck parts of Los Angeles County, where mandatory evacuation orders were given on Friday morning, U.S. time, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

Ventura County Fire Department Captain Scott Dettorre warned that as the fire crosses the famous highway 101, "it will make its historic and typical run all the way down Pacific Coast Highway, threatening more homes, more property, more lives", KTLA-TV reports.

No injuries have been reported.

A wind-driven brush fire that broke out in Ventura County, west of Chatsworth, has prompted authorities to order the evacuation of 75,000 homes in L.A. and Ventura counties.

Voluntary evacuations have been added in Ventura County for Lake Sherwood and the area south of Hwy 101 and north of Potrero Road between Westlake Boulevard and Wendy Drive in Thousand Oaks.

While not as big as the Camp Fire, the Woolsey Fire, which now measures approximately 8,000 acres, is in a much more densely populated area.

The blaze comes in the wake of the Thousand Oaks shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill on Wednesday night that killed 13 people, including the gunman.

Cal Fire said the fire, only 5 percent contained, had consumed 70,000 acres.

With the area still reeling from the shooting at the Thousand Oaks bar, the Hill fire has spread to 10,000 acres, quickly shutting down the 101 Freeway. No roadways were closed as of Friday.
