Earlier, DeSantis deflected a question from moderator Jake Tapper of CNN about whether he considers Trump a good role model for children. The debate will be broadcast live on CNN. A new CNN survey conducted by SSRS out Sunday found Gillum with a double-digit lead, 54% to 42%.
If you are confused by that non-sequitur, then you have something in common with Mayor Gillum, who asked Tapper to repeat the question.
DeSantis said he and his wife, Casey "were poking a little fun at ourselves" with the ad, then launched into praise of Trump for relocating the American embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. I'm not going to be involved in the Washington food fight anymore. He's going to throw his covered-up versions of racial epithets.
Gillum would increase the corporate tax rate significantly - he says only for the wealthiest 3 percent of Florida corporations. He also tweeted on Sunday, shortly after his tweet about DeSantis and Gillum, that "Facebook has just stated that they are setting up a system to "purge" themselves of Fake News".
DeSantis's tax returns show he owed money, while Gillum's returns show he was eligible for a refund. "I have been black all my life". Gillum, a democratic socialist, surprised many with his primary victory. But his transition to the general election has been a rocky one. Gillum called DeSantis a Trump "stooge" and said the former Congressman has "no relationship with the truth". "We all have friends that sometimes let us down", Gillum said. "It has everything to do with whether we want Florida to go in a good direction". But his campaign, which in the primaries was nearly entirely predicated on his fealty to Trump, has moved slowly in rolling out a policy platform. And Gillum is scheduled to campaign this week alongside former Vice President Joe Biden and 2016 presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. His website's issues page doesn't address it, which polling has shown to be a top concern for Florida voters.
"DeSantis is working hard".
He then tweeted that Rick Scott is "easily one of the best governors in the US". "Rick Scott gave him tremendous foundations to further build on", Trump said. It was a reference to a trip Gillum made to NY, where he met two undercover Federal Bureau of Investigation agents were investigating corruption in Tallahassee.
Gillum promptly fired back, quoting Trump and suggesting the President hadn't been fearless enough to mention him by name: "When you lie about me from the most powerful office in the world", Gillum wrote, "and still don't have the courage to @ me". Last year, the Tallahassee mayor made headlines by defeating the National Rifle Association, which sued the city over an ordinance that outlawed firearm use in public parks.
The former congressman who resigned in April in part because of a House ethics complaint against him repeatedly cut off Gillum's well-articulated debate responses while continuously calling Gillum by his first name. Earlier this month, his campaign sent a letter to television stations asking that they halt running a Florida Republican Party ad that ties Gillum directly to it. In the course of the investigation, Gillum once unknowingly attended the Broadway hit musical "Hamilton" in the company of an undercover agent. DeSantis denied the comment was about race, but Gillum alleged that the Republican's campaign has tried to undermine his with racist dog whistles. Bill Nelson, who could benefit from Gillum's appeal among young voters and minorities.
The second most telling, and certainly the funniest, came after DeSantis alleged that Gillum has called for the abolition of the Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and a weakening of immigration rules, a statement Politifact Florida has rated half true.
