Based on sales projections, 75 percent of the 302 million possible combinations will be chosen for Tuesday's drawing, up from 59.1 percent in Friday's, said Carole Gentry, spokeswoman for Maryland Lottery and Gaming.

Scores of American lottery players were disappointed they hadn't become an overnight billionaire Saturday - but they'll get another chance to scoop the jackpot, with $1.6 billion (R22,945,647,497) up for grabs in a few days. CA did sell a 5/6 prize worth $1.9 million.

The numbers drawn were 62-16-54-57-69 and the Powerball number was 23. The lump sum cash payout is estimated at $354.3 million and the next drawing for the Powerball is set for Wednesday.

A Spanish lottery called El Gordo typically generates a larger purse than Mega Millions or Powerball, but that money is split between many winners and no single prize in El Gordo approaches the size of the latest Mega Millions jackpot, Elkin said.

The all-time largest lottery win was on January 13, 2016, when three tickets shared $1.586 billion in a Powerball drawing, CNBC reported.

The Mega Millions jackpot has been growing since July, when a group of 11 California office workers won $543 million. Mega Millions now marks the largest lottery prize in the history of the United States.

That is partly by design.

After millions tried and failed their hand at winning the ultimate jackpot, the Mega Millions and Powerball prizes have grown to monstrous proportions, offering up a combined jackpot of $2.22 billion to date. The games are played in 44 states, Washington D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The estimated jackpot of $476 million will grow to $620 million. But when they do, the amount is mind-blowing - as we can see in recent Mega Millions jackpots.
