Amazon unveils waterproof Kindle Paperwhite with double the storage

Amazon’s new Kindle Paperwhite is the first update to the company’s line of lightweight budget e-readers since 2015

The Kindle Paperwhite is ready for the bath

Eric Saarnio, head of Amazon Devices for Europe, said: "Customers love the Kindle Paperwhite, and we're excited to bring premium features - like a thinner and lighter flush-front design, additional storage, waterproofing and Audible - to our most popular Kindle".

Twice the storage : The base storage now starts at 8 GB, twice what the previous generation Paperwhite offered. Plus, it's water-resistant so you don't have to worry about reading by the pool or accidentally dropping it in the bathtub. Or choose 32 GB to hold more magazines, comics, and audiobooks.

Like the Oasis, the new Paperwhite is also getting Audible audiobooks playback (via Bluetooth headphone connectivity), and support for Amazon's Whispersync software so you can switch between a standard ebook and audio without losing your place. Like all Kindles, the new Paperwhite has a battery capable of going weeks at a time between charges.

The built-in adjustable light lets you read indoors and outdoors, day and night.

With the mid-range Kindle Voyage out of the picture for a couple of months now, it's certainly not surprising to see an "all-new" Kindle Paperwhite released at a $130 starting price.

Get instant access to new releases and bestsellers, plus over a million titles at $2.99 or less.

Other features include the ability to easily personalise your reading experience with a simple tap changing the settings, font and type size to how you like it. You can also view reading accomplishments, like how many days in the past month you've read, as well as fun facts and tips so you can get the most out of your device. Everything you loved about the previous Kindle Paperwhite generation is obviously still here, including a glare-free 6-inch screen with 300 ppi resolution, a built-in adjustable light for flawless readability in all conditions and environments, and a battery life "measured in weeks". The basic model costs from US$129.99 (with ads; US$149.99 without), the 32 GB variant starts at US$159.99 (with ad support; US$179.99 without), and the top-of-the-range 32 GB edition with Wi-Fi and 4G LTE is priced at US$249.99 (no ads).

According to Amazon the Paperwhite is the best-selling and highest-rated Kindle on the market, which is why pre-orders for the All New Kindle Paperwhite are opening up today.
