Donald Trump hosts lunch Thursday for star rapper Kanye West in the latest push to portray his presidency as being on the side of blacks, rather than only the overwhelmingly white voter block behind his surprise election. But he said "this hat, it gives me power".
In the past, West has been an outspoken critic of politicians.
Mr. West weighed in on race relations, saying his 2005 statement in the wake of Hurricane Katrina-"George Bush doesn't care about black people"-was the result of a "victimized mentality". The cool part here is that the plane emits only water vapor as its exhaust, not that Trump gives a shit about the environment enough to invest in such a thing.
West was joined in the Oval Office by legendary football player and activist Jim Brown.
"Well if he doesn't then he gets overruled by me, because I make the decisions, he doesn't", Trump said.
The club shared an image of the typically straight faced Kanye West, with the caption: 'The global break has got us like'.
"I love this guy right here", he said Thursday, embracing Trump while wearing the president's trademark red "Make America Great Again" ball cap. "It has complex notes to it".
West credited Trump with preventing a war with North Korea and encouraged Trump to swap his usual Air Force One for a hydrogen-powered plane.
Mr. West said that he didn't have "a lot of male energy" in his home due to his parents' separation and noted that he is married into a family of strong women-including his wife, Kim Kardashian.
All the while, Trump sat with his hands clasped on the Resolute Desk, nodding along as the musician continued. So, there's theories that there's infinite amounts of universe, and there's alternate universe.
Kanye told Trump that, "as a guy", he looks up to him and to "American industry guys, non political, no bullshit...goes in and gets it done". Ivanka Trump wore a wide smile, while Kushner pressed his hands into the handles of his chair.
Asked if he would consider campaigning with the rapper, Trump said: "I could see it". "That was pretty impressive". "I just channeled it". Seated near West was Jim Brown, the former Cleveland Browns running back.
It was, in the president's words, "Quite something".
Asked if he intends to run for president himself, the rapper said "only after, in 2024".
She secured a pardon for a great-grandmother who had been serving a life sentence for drugs offences.
"There were people who said Trump would never win", West said in the interview. Law enforcement authorities caught him giving orders to associates when they would visit him in jail.
The rapper had been invited to lunch to discuss prison reform but turned what would ordinarily have been a staid White House photo-op into what must have been one of the most unusual encounters in the Oval Office's storied history.
