Here's the kicker, because with Sony there usually is one: the name change won't actually work for every game.
Users that have already pre-registered as testers in previous PS4 software betas will have access to this new feature "soon". The much-requested PSN Online ID Change feature is now entering PlayStation's Preview Program.
All PSN users will be able to change their name once for free, though each subsequent change will cost money. You can't change that after completing the name change, Sony said.
To make the change from xxxSniperJoe420xxx to "MyWifeIsMyLife2012" you'll merely need to head to the settings menu or profile section of the PS4. Older PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita games may not support the feature and could experience errors as a result.
Users will be able to change their PlayStation Network Online ID as many times as they want during the preview program. The preview program is scheduled to end in November, with the feature officially rolling out in early 2019.
If you ever wanted to change your PSN Online ID on your PS4 but were frustrated at the lack of ability to do so, there is some good news on the horizon.
"This feature is compatible with PS4 games originally published after April 1, 2018, and a large majority of the most-played PS4 games that were released before this date". If that happens, you can revert back to your original ID for free at any time (this can only be done once during the preview program). We'll get a list of officially compatible games at some point in the future.
