Rouhani warns U.S. on sanctions, does not rule out talks

His opening line Tuesday, as he bragged about how successful his administration has been, was widely laughed at by the assembled group of world leaders.

Regarding trade, Trump promised he would renegotiate broken and bad trade deals, adding that the USA opened its markets to other countries for too long.

"OPEC and OPEC nations are as usual ripping off the rest of the world", Trump said.

When Trump criticized socialism, a member of the Swedish delegation frowned with disapproval.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (pahm-PAY'-oh) said Monday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, "We've been at this the other way an awfully long time and failed".

Those efforts will all be on display as Trump addressed the gathering of world leaders, delivering a speech that - like previous year - touted the President's "foreign policy successes". He also spoke of achievements in foreign policy, immigration and reforming the USA tax code.

Trump says the review will examine what is working and what is not working and whether countries that receive USA aid "have our interests at heart".

President Donald Trump is targeting China, saying the USA will no longer tolerate unfair trade arrangements that allow countries to dump their products in America, subsidize their goods, target US industries and manipulate currency to gain unfair advantages.

A reference to Trump, and his pledge to "Make America Great Again"?

Trump went ahead Monday with a tax hike on $200 billion of Chinese imports.

Trump said the bad policies helped create an $800 billion USA trade deficit.

France's top diplomat is decrying what he calls U.S. President Donald Trump's "mix of unilateralism and isolationism" but says that's no reason to snub Trump or lock him out of world events.

For Iran, Trump reinforced his decision to abandon the 2015 nuclear treaty and reimpose sanctions on the country - and said there will be more sanctions to punish the regime.

The North has stopped testing missiles since the president's historic summit with Kim - but has continued working on its nuclear weapons program and is insisting on a formal end to the Korean War before making further concessions. He received a stay of punishment at least until Thursday, when he is to meet with Trump at the White House.

Trump has also pulled the U.S. out of the Trans Pacific Partnership, has threatened to leave the World Trade Organization, and has criticized the G7, the North American Free Trade Agreement and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The two sides can listen to each other right here in this Assembly.

"The U.S. will not tell you how to live and work or worship", Trump said.

"I didn't expect that reaction, but that's OK", he said, prompting louder laughter. "So in a number of different ways, the President's going to address this issue".

"America will never apologize for protecting its citizens", he said. His boast elicited laughter from the scores of heads of state and delegates in the audience for the speech.

And the European Union has emphasized as "critically important" a trio of initiatives that the Trump administration abhors or has abandoned: the Paris Climate Agreement, the Iran nuclear deal and the Global Compacts for Refugees and Migrants, political declaration that is directed at improving the way in which the worldwide community responds to large movements of refugees and migrants, as well as to protracted refugee situations.

He also used the speech to insist the USA was stronger and richer than when he took office almost two years ago.

"We, the people, are sovereign in America, so that infringements on our sovereignty are not infringements on abstractions or infringements on the government".

"Iran's leaders sow chaos, death and destruction", Trump told the annual gathering.

In remarks to reporters on his way to his speech before the United Nations General Assembly, Trump said he would not meet the Iranians until they "change their tune".

Trump's second-ever address to the worldwide body served to reaffirm to a domestic political audience, just as much as to the world, Trump's continued commitment to the policies and convictions that he has unleashed on the world in the year since he last addressed the UN.

Trump earlier this year withdrew the USA from a nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers and reinstated economic sanctions.

"We look forward to having a great relationship with Iran, but it won't happen now".

Trump and Kim met in June in Singapore.

This is not the first time that Trump has evoked unexpected hilarity.

President Donald Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in have signed the first major agreement of Trump's trade agenda.

Trump ran a bit late for his once-a-year speech at the U.N. General Assembly, forcing organizers to change the order of speakers. Instead, Temer's speech was followed by an awkward pause as United Nations officials prepared the podium to accommodate the No. 3 speaker, Ecuador's President Lenin Moreno Garces, who is in a wheelchair.

The rain pelted down through the clouds and onto NY streets early Tuesday morning (local time), with the silent lights of police sirens cutting through the gloom on the walk to the United Nations headquarters.

"Despite requests, I have no plans to meet Iranian President Hassan Rouhani". Both leaders are attending an annual United Nations gathering. Trump wasn't specific in Tuesday's tweet about the origin of the "requests" for a meeting.

Trump withdrew the US from a nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers and reinstated economic sanctions on Iran. Maybe someday in the future. "I am sure he is an absolutely lovely man", Trump wrote in a post on Twitter earlier on Tuesday. When it was President Donald Trump's turn to address those in attendance, he predictably turned to the usual brand of chest-thumping he relies on whenever afforded the opportunity to brag about his reign over America.

At the U.N., Trump seized his opportunity to assert American independence from the global body.

"We're in the process of setting up a meeting with North Korea".

On Wednesday, Trump will chair for the first time a meeting of the U.N. Security Council on the topic of counter-proliferation. His four days of choreographed foreign affairs were to stand in contrast to a presidency sometimes defined by disorder.
