#VillageRockstars is India's official entry for the #Oscars!
The coming-of-age film tells the story of 10-year-old Dhunu, a young girl from a remote village in Assam, who dreams of owning a guitar and forming a rock band despite the abysmal financial situation at home.
Hindi film Newton by director Amit Masurkar and starring Rajkummar Rao was India's official submission to the Oscars previous year. The jury included members like Mr Shiboprasad Mukherjee, Ms Mrinal Kulkarni and Mr Vinod Ganatra among many others. "Very proud and to select this film and send it to the Oscars", jury member Anant Mahadevan was quoted by The Indian Express as saying.
After winning the Best Feature film Award at the 65th National Film Awards, Rima Das's directorial "Village Rockstars" is set for release across India on September 28. Since there was no crew, she shot the film in natural light when the sunlight was not that harsh. "All the actors, barring well-known Assamese actor Kulada Bhattyacharya, who appears as a wise man, are from my village".
The announcement was made by SV Rajendra Singh Babu, Chairman, Selection Committee for Oscar Award, FFI.
A few countries have already announced their candidates for the prestigious prize.
On the next steps and the need to get her film seen and noticed by the Academy members, Das said: "I have heard that we need a good promotion campaign". (1988), and Ashutosh Gowariker's Lagaan (2001) - have made it to the top five nominees for best foreign language film.
The 91st Academy Awards will be held on 24 February 2019.
