See Joaquin Phoenix in full 'Joker' makeup

Joaquin Phoenix as Joker

First Look: Joaquin Phoenix in Full Joker Makeup

Warner Bros. Pictures also tweeted out the short video.

Joaquin Phoenix's debut image for the the standalone Joker movie from Warner Bros. wasn't quite what fans expect, instead showing a somewhat goofy, greasy-haired and haggard middle-aged man. Realistic, rumpled, and totally bonkers without being over-the-top, this is exactly the kind of look that could make this film feel as grounded and demented as it angles to be. At the very end, we see him in full clown makeup, though it's more of a classical circus clown style than a recognizable version of the iconic character. He's presumably Arthur Fleck in this moment, but halfway through the short clip, flashes of the Joker start to appear as Phoenix begins to grin.

Phillips previously revealed the first look at Phoenix as The Joker without makeup on Instagram as well.

Phoenix is the third person to play the Joker in the last ten years, proceeded by Heath Ledger, who passed away in 2008, and Jared Leto.

Directed and co-written by Todd Phillips, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix as the titular character along with Robert De Niro, Marc Maron, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, and Bill Camp.

The film, which is due to hit cinemas in October 2019, will reportedly be set in the 80s, following the Joker from his early days as a failed comedian before he turns to a life of crime in Gotham City.
