Pompeo sets goal for complete denuclearization in North Korea by 2021

Mr. Trump noted other gains, including North Korea releasing American prisoners, returning remains of USA soldiers from the Korean War and stopping its nuclear and missile tests.

Mount Paektu, which straddles the China-North Korea border and is known as Mount Changbai in China, holds a venerable place in Korean folklore.

Kim Jong Un, too, has visited the mountain around major developments in North Korea, such as before he executed top officials including his uncle Jang Song-thaek in late 2013, and following North Korea's fifth nuclear test in 2016.

Moon will also convey to Trump both his and Kim's desire to obtain a declaration ending the Korean War by the end of this year, he said.

The North Korean leader on Wednesday agreed to shutter the Tongchang-ri missile-testing site in the presence of worldwide observers, a move the U.S. welcomed by saying it was ready for immediate talks aimed at denuclearising the North.

"This will mark the beginning of negotiations to transform U.S. -DPRK relations through the process of rapid denuclearization of North Korea, to be completed by January 2021, as committed by Chairman Kim, and to construct a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula", Pompeo said.

He made the announcement at the press briefing that followed the signing of the Pyeongyang Joint Agreement on Wednesday.

'That's what we're talking about right now, ' the official said, adding that 'talking to foreign leaders is better than not talking with foreign leaders, and the president has been firm with everybody on this'. "The road to our future will not always be smooth, and we may face challenges and trials we can't anticipate, but we aren't afraid of headwinds because our strength will grow as we overcome each trial based on the strength of our nation".

North Korea says Kim's grandfather and father, Kim Jong-il, were born at Mount Paektu, a centrepiece of the North's idolisation and propaganda campaign to highlight the sacred bloodline of the ruling Kim family.

Historians say the 5,000-year timeline of Korean history is a groundless claim that became part of South Korea's official narrative after being inserted in school textbooks during the rule of former dictator Chun Doo-hwan.

"There is nothing the North has offered so far that would constitute irreversible movement toward denuclearisation, however you define that, by January 2021 or any other time, or even a reduction of the military threat it poses to the South and the region", said a U.S. intelligence official.

This week's summit comes as Moon is under increasing pressure from Washington to find a path forward in efforts to get Kim to completely - and unilaterally - abandon his nuclear arsenal. "Given how Kim recently suggested a specific timetable for denuclearization, a more concrete agreement than one in Singapore is expected to come out in the next summit".

And the two Koreas, he said, 'will file a joint bid to host the 2032 Olympics.

U.S. officials said the ambiguity about what Washington was supposed to do for the North to close its nuclear complex at Yongbyon gave Kim room to argue that Washington had not done enough for North Korea to follow through on its pledges.
