Grant Robicheaux, Famed Surgeon, Accused of Drugging, Sexually Assaulting Women

At a news conference Tuesday, Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said the pair is accused of picking up the women at bars or parties, drugging them to the point that the women became unconscious or almost unconscious, then raping them at Robicheaux's apartment.

Orthopaedic surgeon Grant W Robicheaux, 38, and Cerissa Laura Riley, 31, were arrested on September 12 after being charged with rape by use of drugs, oral copulation by anaesthesia or controlled substance, and other crimes, Orange County district attorney Tony Rackauckas said.

USA media outlets reported that prosecutors suspected there could be hundreds - if not thousands - of other victims. He did not say whether the same women were seen in multiple clips.

Robicheaux had two assault rifles unlawfully and while he had licences for two other guns as well as several large capacity magazines, his charges are enhanced for possessing a firearm during a health and safety code violation, says the Orange County District Attorney's Office.

"We believe the defendants used their good looks and charm to lower the inhibitions of their potential prey", Mr Rackauckas said.

"The women in the videos appear to be highly intoxicated beyond the ability to consent or resist".

"We believe there may be many unidentified victims out there, " Rackauckas said.

The doctor had appeared on a Bravo reality TV series called "Online Dating Rituals of the American Male" in 2014. "In one video, Rackauckas says, the couple is in a bar, Cerissa introduces her (self ). and then introduces her to Robicheaux and then they invite her to a party".

The first said she met the pair at a restaurant on 10 April 2016 and was invited by them to a boat party.

One of the victims contacted police in April 2016 after she was allegedly raped, and on October 2, 2016, one of Robicheaux's neighbors called police when he heard a different woman screaming for help from inside his house. The woman called police the next day, and a forensic exam found multiple controlled substances. Attorneys for the both defendants have denied the allegations. They brought her to Robicheaux's apartment and began "sexually assaulting her with the intent to commit rape", officials said.

On Oct. 2, 2016, the defendants met the second victim at a bar in Newport Beach and drank with her until she was unconscious.

Both defendants are accused of sexual assault with intent to commit rape in that case.

The district attorney's office asked that any women who think they may have been sexually assaulted by the couple contact the office's lead investigator, Eric Wiseman.

Robicheaux and Riley are also charged with possessing large quantities of drugs.

The investigation into the couple didn't have a breakthrough until January 2018, when police had enough evidence to execute a search warrant on Robicheaux's apartment.

Robicheaux's profile name was "InGoodHands".

But investigators found hundreds of videos on Robicheaux's phone after he was arrested, showing women "in various states of undress, consciousness and being assaulted", Ms Van Der Linden said. The woman woke up in Robicheaux's apartment, screaming so loud that neighbors called the police.

The two were known to attend festivals dating back to 2015, including Burning Man in Black Rock Desert, Nevada; Dirtybird Campout festival in Silverado; Splash House festival in Palm Springs; and Landmarks near Page, Arizona, Rackauckas said.

Robicheaux and Riley are freed on US$100,000 (NZ$152,000) bail each.

"We've all heard of a wolf in sheep's clothing".
