Rashford's contribution to the games against Switzerland and Spain has reopened the debate about whether the 20-year-old should keep his place alongside Harry Kane as England's second striker instead of Raheem Sterling.
"'If you don't mind to lose a couple of minutes, I'm going to do something not for you but the United fans and I think I hold myself to the United fans and for them I am going to spend two minutes with you".
Rashford will miss United's Premier League clash against Watford on Saturday. He had 53 appearances but if you want to take to the minutes of play, he played 3068 and if you want to divide that by 90 minute matches, he played 34.2 matches of 90 minute matches in 2016-17.
"I was at Manchester City against Huddersfield and you think: 'Well, OK, it is a game where Foden will play.' But actually, if I am Pep, I have other players, senior players, who I have to get up to speed because they haven't had many match minutes".
"Marcus Rashford is not Dominic Solanke".
Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has been told to join a club like Everton by ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher.
A move to another club could provide more playing time but sticking at United will help him win silverware.
Rashford will serve the first game of a three-match suspension this weekend following his red card against Burnley before the global break, further restricting his opportunity to build on his part in England's run to the semifinals of the World Cup in Russian Federation, where he made six appearances. I think Harry at that age had hardly played anywhere near the matches for Spurs. But for the Manchester United supporters is important they have the right idea of how things are in reality.
"Everybody's getting frustrated as he's not playing much, but he is playing for England".
At United, Rashford has Romelu Lukaku in his way at centre-forward and Alexis Sanchez occupying the left flank. Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek, another starter against Swtizerland, kept his place in the England squad despite not starting any of the Blues' opening four league games this season.
Carragher suggested after England's 1-0 win over Switzerland on Tuesday that Rashford may have to leave Old Trafford to play more regularly and fulfil his potential and Mourinho, clearly, was not impressed.
"The landscape is what it is and I understand the difficulties club managers have".
The problem for Rashford, and Southgate, is that he is not getting to play in his best position at United.
