NHL Rumors: Senators Trade Erik Karlsson To San Jose Sharks

Ottawa Senators trade their captain and star defenceman Erik Karlsson to San Jose Sharks

After just missing out on John Tavares, the Sharks were able to land a whale this offseason to go with Brent Burns and Marc-Edouard Vlasic on the blueline. "The word "elite" is often thrown around casually but Erik's skillset and abilities fit that description like few other players in today's game. We are thrilled to welcome Erik and his wife, Melinda, to San Jose".

The Senators dealt Karlsson and prospect forward Francis Perron to the Sharks. He explained how Ottawa made out in a deal that the team seemed destined to lose from the moment Karlsson's name appeared in trade rumours. That pick becomes a first if the Sharks make the Stanley Cup Final in 2019.

If the Senators chose to make this move now, that means contract talks they were having with Karlsson's camp were going nowhere and he had no plans to re-sign here. "All of the players leaving our organization have a very bright future in this league and we wish them all the best". Nine years ago on September 12, 2009, the Senators dealt winger Dany Heatley to the Sharks on the first day of camp. The Sens send Karlsson to San Jose in exchange for eight assets. Karlsson won the Norris as the league's best defenseman in 2012 and 2015.

"These things are never easy", general manager Pierre Dorion said. "This trade represents the best opportunity for the Ottawa Senators to rebuild towards a consistent excellence that we are striving for". Karlsson now has one year left on an expiring contract that will pay him $7.5 million next season but has a cap hit of $6.5 million. In 627 career regular season games over nine seasons with Ottawa, he has tallied 126 goals and 518 points. Sharks GM Doug Wilson did it with Joe Thornton.

Most reaction to the trade has been "Ottawa did not get almost enough".

Balcers spent last season in the AHL and Norris was a first-round pick in 2017 and entering his sophomore season at MI.

The departure of the 28-year-old is the latest development in what has been a turbulent stretch for the Senators.
