As you can imagine, mileage will vary depending on the age of the device, the number of apps and amount of data installed on the hardware, and the general wear and tear that has been placed on the device over the course of its lifetime. While Apple iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR will be coming with iOS 12 out of the box, other smartphones receiving this feature will be iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE and iPhone 5s.

To sign up for the public beta you will need to visit beta.apple.com on your iOS device, and log in with your iCloud account. An easy way to do this is through iTunes, but you can also back everything up in iCloud (as long as you're okay with possibly overwriting your previous iOS 11 backup with a newer iOS 12 one).

Once you are registered, you head over to the iOS tab and you will be asked to download the beta tester profile.
