It's created to be the most powerful Mustang out of the factory, able to hit 150mph while clocking a quarter-mile time in the mid-eights. Billed as the fastest production Mustang on the drag strip, the 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet will be a seriously rare sight: Ford is only making 68 examples.
50 years after the original Cobra Jet, Ford's legendary drag auto is reborn as a non-road-legal beast capable of running in the mid-8 second range down a quarter mile while topping 240km/h. The model is now available to order and pricing starts at $130,000. You can find the new Cobra Jet on a static display at the Woodward Dream Cruise in the Mustang Alley this Saturday, Aug. 18. It comes with an NHRA-certified safety roll cage, FIA-certified seats, and anniversary-badged racing wheels.
In a statement, Ford Performance Parts global director, Eric Cin, said "From the very first Mustang Cobra Jets dominating the 1968 NHRA Winternationals to our modern-day racers, the Ford Performance Parts team continues to build on Cobra Jet's success at the track over five decades".
Besides the unique engine, the Cobra Jet has two-way coil-over shocks, an adjustable ride height and a solid 9-inch rear end.
The new 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet is available to order now, in either Race Red or Oxford White. Production is limited to just 68 cars, to honour that 1968 debut, starting from United States $130,000.
Speaking with The Drive, Matt Leaver of Ford Performance Communications said that Ford is not ready to release any specifics on power output or timings. Credit for this formula goes to legendary East Coast Ford dealer Bob Tasca, grandfather of current Motorcraft/Quick Lane Mustang NHRA Funny Car driver Bob Tasca III and the man who coined the phrase "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday".
The official debut for the 2018 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet will take place during this weekend's Woodward Dream Cruise.
