The Indian Independence Act was brought about in 1947, which saw the British Raj grant independence to the Dominion of Pakistan (modern-day Pakistan) and East Pakistan (Bangladesh).

Change-of-guard ceremonies were also held at the mausoleums of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Allama Iqbal in Karachi and Lahore, respectively.

Starting at the beginning of August, fairs, stalls and shops pop up throughout the country to sell national flags, bunting, badges, banners and other celebratory merchandise.

A 21-gun salute will also take place in Islamabad. Messages from the country's President, Mamnoon Hussain, and Imran Khan, the incoming prime minister, were read out.

Addressing the main event of Independence Day at the Convention Centre in the federal capital, he said August 14 rejuvenates our spirit.

"I wish all my Indian friends - in Bhutan, in India and beyond - a very happy Independence Day", the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Tshering Tobgay, tweeted.

Why is Pakistan's Independence Day before India's?

The initiative is part of celebrations planned by the Embassy of Pakistan in Berlin for the 71st Independence Anniversary of Pakistan this year. The Doodle, Google writes, was inspired by "Indian truck art, a long-standing tradition in this four million square kilometre nation where truckers who live on the road surround themselves with cheerful folk art to occupy their minds during long months away from their families".

Saudi Arabia's extensive Pakistani community celebrated their country's independence day on Tuesday with special flag-raising ceremonies in Riyadh and Jeddah.
