Xaviant pulls The Culling 2 from stores, makes original free-to-play

The Culling 2 removed

The Culling 2 Cancelled After Just Over a Week, Original Brought Back to 'Day One'

"One thing that has emerged very clearly for us is that The Culling 2 was not a game that you asked for, and it's not the game that you expect as a worthy successor to The Culling", director of operations Josh Van Veld said. The team changed too much of the game too fast, he added, altering what made it special in the first place. As far as we're concerned, The Culling 2 will go down in history as a game that gave up its creative spark in order to cash in on the battle royale hype despite it already having an established community with its original game.

Developer Xaviant is shutting down The Culling 2, giving refunds to those who bought it. Xaviant is rebooting the original game as free-to-play as a result.

So it's nearly shocking to see Xaviant admitting to their faults so quickly, but removing The Culling 2 from sale just a week after launch. In December 2017, the studio said it was halting development on the game and working on a sequel instead.

The day one form of The Culling from the March 2016 launch is coming to test servers.

It will be interesting to see if Xaviant's newfound commitment to the original will pay off, but the developers appear keen to listen to the community and are looking to craft a game that the players want. "What we see is that there's tremendous value in the day one build of The Culling and you've been asking for it". Van Veld also apologized for how the team handled The Culling. "And so we took a game that you guys loved, and we changed it out from under you, and I want to apologize for that". It is also hoping that offering the game as a free-to-play alternative to PUBG will bring back some of its player base which migrated to other games after Xaviant's early updates turned players off. "It's been hard for us to accept that that's something that we need to put the work into to get to you, but we've decided it's time". Xaviant is calling this the "Day One" version and it will remain a constant on test servers so as to help guide Xaviant in the right direction for when implementing new features to the game.
