Ten, who became the first Kazakh figure skater to win an Olympic medal when he secured bronze at Sochi 2014, was stabbed as two men attempted to steal his auto mirrors, according to news agency Kazinform.

Doctors in Almaty say the 25-year-old skater died in the hospital there.

"Denis Ten caught two unidentified persons trying to steal mirrors from his auto", the Almaty Department of Internal Affairs said in a statement. This is such an incredible loss and tragedy. He was Kazakhstan's official ambassador for the "Almaty 2022" Olympic bid as well.

"Denis Yurevich Ten spotted two unknown men who tried to steal mirrors from his auto". A warm personality and a charming man. "Such a tragedy to lose him at such a young age", the statement read.

Ten skated at three Winter Olympic games and finished 27th at the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang. I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to his family.

We offer our deepest condolences to Denis Ten's family and friends during this painful time. "Your time with us was way too short".

Canadian skater Patrick Chan, who won silver in the same competition, said on Twitter he was "honored and grateful to have shared the ice" with Ten.

Olympic Council of Asia President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah said: "It is hard to comprehend and to accept this truly very bad news about the death of Denis Ten".
