It was a very strong freshman class, and all five shows are back this year.
Besides the repeat nomination for Dowd, "The Handmaid's Tale" scored nods for Drama Series, Actress in a Drama Series (Elisabeth Moss), Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (Joseph Fiennes), and two additional nominations for Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (Alexis Bledel and Yvonne Strahovski).
The show about noble families vying for the Iron Throne faces a tough challenge from perennial favorite comedy sketch show "Saturday Night Live" and HBO stablemate "Westworld" with 21 nominations each. Only one nominations category is all-white, and in three categories minority actors account for more than half the nominees.
First-time nominees in one-off projects such as limited series, TV movies, and guest appearances this year include Darren Criss ("The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story"), John Legend ("Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert"), and Jessica Biel ("The Sinner") for lead actor and actress in a limited series or TV movie, respectively. And during Thursday's 2018 Emmy nominations announcement, it was revealed that it's been nominated for 22 more, including Best Drama Series, Best Directing for a Drama Series and Best Writing for a Drama Series.
