On average, the top 10 most followed accounts, consisting mostly of music celebrities, saw a plunge of around two million.
The decision had an nearly immediate impact with followers of many noted Indian politicians and film stars seeing a sharp decline. As per the latest figures on Rahul Gandhi's Twitter account, around 7.22 million Twitter users are following the young leader.
The size of the drops were not directly correlated to the amount of initial followers.
Starting Thursday, Twitter has been locking fictitious accounts for bulk tweeting, posting large number of unsolicited replies, or sharing links with misleading information.
According to Twitter, the new measures are aimed at improving accuracy in a bid to make the site a "more trusted service for public conversation".
"Follower counts are a visible feature, and we want everyone to have confidence that the numbers are meaningful and accurate".

In a statement, Twitter said most people will see a change of four followers or fewer and that larger follower counts will experience more significant drops.
