Well, it's definite. Warner Bros has formally announced that it's pressing ahead with a thus-far untitled Joker origins movie.

The film has been in development for some time, with Phoenix reportedly in talks for months.

The Joker movie has been a bit of an enigma amongst DC Comics fans, ever since it was first announced in September of a year ago. The story is rumored to feature the Clown Prince of Crime as a failed 1980s comedian who becomes The Joker after bombing with audiences, a deliberate nod to Martin Scorsese's 1982 film Kings of Comedy about a delusional comedian.

The Hollywood Reporter first reported the greenlight.

This set-up allows different actors take the same roles, but different versions.

"I see [a superhero movie] as any other movie", Phoenix continued. I don't really care about the genre, I care about the character and the filmmaker. According to insiders, the Oscar-winner will not only will be back for the "Suicide Squad" sequel, Warner Bros.is also developing his own standalone movie that will be separate from Phoenix's Joker project. "So I wouldn't say, hands down, no - I wouldn't do that kind of movie".

Jared Leto most recently played the Joker in "Suicide Squad". The film, which is not connected to the DC Extended Universe, does not yet have a release date.
