A Chicago-area native was killed by a stray bullet while celebrating her one-year wedding anniversary in Mexico City. The U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs confirmed the death and released the victim's name, Tatiana Mirutenko, in a statement.

"We extend our honest condolences to friends and family members of the deceased", department spokesman Noel Clay said in an email. Mirutenko's body will be returning to the US tomorrow. It was heartbreaking to all of us in the Sports Performance family.

- Friends, family, and co-workers of a 27-year-old San Francisco woman shot and killed in Mexico City over the weekend are mourning her loss and remembering her as a handsome, smart, amusing and talented sister, daughter, and wife.

Mexican officials said the intended target had been a local bouncer, who was also struck but survived, the AP reported. Mirutenko's parents are devastated. "A year ago, we were selecting flowers for the wedding".

The 46-year-old doorman survived the shooting, USA media report. "She would give 200 percent". As a mother, we always say things, but she inspired me to be better. "I don't know how I'm going to survive without her, but with her memory and knowing how unbelievable she was to every single person that she ever came across, I will use that to incorporate into my life to be as great as she was to honor her memory".

Earlier this year, the State Department rolled out a new tiered travel advisory system to warn USA citizens of potential dangers while traveling overseas. Earlier this year, the U.S. State Department issued a travel ban to five Mexican states, the same warning issued to war-torn countries like Syria, Afghanistan and Somalia. Mexico state surrounds Mexico City to the east, west and north. The neighborhood is known as a nice area and a popular destination for tourists. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City is providing all appropriate consular services to her family.

The Playa del Carmen advisory was removed about two weeks later.

Mirutenko moved to San Francisco for her job with Nektar Therapeutics, according to her family.

"Many throughout Nektar, and outside the company, valued her positive energy, insight and sheer enthusiasm for life", the company said in a statement. "She will be incredibly missed by all of us at Nektar Therapeutics", Ruddock said.
