Djimon Hounsou Shazam The Wizard DC Comics

‘Guardians’ actor Djimon Hounsou cast in DC’s Shazam! as the Wizard

Production on the DC Comics adaptation of Shazam may be finished, but that's not stopping us from learning about a new cast member. So, in the span of just two months in 2019, Hounsou will play a DC character and a Marvel character, and he'll be co-starring in two different movies headlined by characters called Captain Marvel (Shazam's name before his DC Comics rebranding).

Today, we've learned who'll be playing The Wizard, the ancient sorcerer who granted Billy Batson with those powers. Most tellings of the comic book story follow an orphan child named Billy Batson who is granted the ability to become an adult hero with godlike powers by the ancient Wizard.

The size of Hounsou's role isn't clear, but if he was able to shoot his role without anyone finding out about it, there's a chance it could be only a quick appearance when his character gives Billy Baston his superpowers.

Hounsou's breakout role came in 1997 in Steven Spielberg's Amistad, and he's since appeared regularly in major roles in films like Blood Diamond, Constantine, and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. However, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe has proven time and time again, remaining secretive about certain aspects of a film sometimes indicates the exact opposite: that big things are bubbling below the surface.

Indeed, while Sandberg's resume of horror hits like Annabelle: Creation and Lights Out would suggest a gritty DC film, instead Shazam! looks to be something more along the lines of the DCEU's first comedy. Hounsou is best known for playing Korath in Guardians of the Galaxy, a role he is scheduled to reprise in Marvel Studios' Captain Marvel - giving the actor the distinction of being in both Captain Marvel and Shazam! Since the character is the source of the title character's powers, he'll likely make a quick appearance. Shazam! opens April 5, 2019 and also stars Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Ron Cephas Jones.
