Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti is one of several USA mayors set to gather at a Texas detention facility to demand family reunification amid the Trump administration's treatment of immigrants.

The surprise touchdown in Texas was "100 percent" the First Lady's idea, according to Stephanie Grisham, the first lady's communications director.

"I'm here to learn about your facility which I know you house children on a long-term basis", she said.

"I'd also like to ask you how I can help these children to reunite with their families as quickly as possible", she said.

"It really bothered her to see this", President Trump said.

President Trump commended Melania for making the trip. The first lady signed it as well.

'She wanted to see everything for herself....

"I'm glad I'm here and I'm looking forward to seeing the children", Melania Trump said at a roundtable discussion with social workers and government officials.

The former model's press secretary Stephanie Grisham said Melania decided to make the last-minute trip to witness the ongoing border crisis firsthand.

The first lady's stop Thursday at Upbring New Hope Children's Center came the morning after President Donald Trump signed an executive order halting the practice of separating these families.

She decided to make the trip on Tuesday-after days of presidential defiance against mounting public outcry and pressure from Congress to relent. "I think anybody with a heart will feel strongly about it - we don't like to see families being separated".

While the spokeswoman pointed out that the images of children behind a chain-link fence were from an intake facility where they were only held briefly, she noted that the first lady still had an emotional reaction to those photos. One said that the average time for a child to be reunited to members of their families was between 42 and 45 days. He told reporters Thursday, Melania went to the border because she's been bothered by what's going on there.

In signing the executive order he used to reverse the separation policy on Wednesday, Trump cited his daughter and his wife. She wants to see a realistic view'. He is supportive of it but she told him, "I'm headed down to Texas, ' and he supported it'".

She was also briefed by nurses on the children's medical care.

Mrs. Trump sat alongside Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar at a table at Upbring New Hope Children's Center and heard caregivers explain how the children are well treated.
