WATN reports the children, ages 7 and 8, told police their grandmother told them there wasn't room for them in the vehicle.

She was charged Sunday with two counts of child endangerment.

With temperatures reaching the 95 degree mark, the 7 and 8-year-old explained to officers how they were hot, because there were no vents in the back to keep them cool.

Cheeks told police that she placed the children in the kennels, but she made sure to check on them periodically. Another neighbor told Fox 13 Cheeks "loves her grandkids" and that they were "always outside playing with the dogs and stuff". She's such a nice lady, " neighbor Skylark Blake said.

They also said they were hot during the drive while enclosed in the dog kennels, complaining their grandmother did not switch on air conditioning and kept the windows of the vehicle shut.

Neighbors of Cheeks expressed their shock after learning about the incident.

The video was filmed by a concerned citizen who was passing by. "If she did that, then that's out of character for her".

"Leimome Cheeks 62, was arrested and charged with two counts of Child Endangerment".

She posted bond of $100 and the department of children's services is now investigating the family. I only met her like once maybe twice.

"I mean it could be an honest mistake".

Police say that the children are okay.

Cheeks is expected to appear in court Monday morning. The woman is being held at the Shelby County Jail.
