Minnesota Public Radio, which broke the story and closely followed the raccoon's climb from its headquarters less than a block away, branded the animal #mprraccoon.

The animal made it to the roof early Wednesday, where traps baited with cat food were waiting.

A raccoon is finding itself in deeper and deeper - er, higher and higher - trouble as it climbs downtown St. Paul's UBS Tower. Workers in the office building, whose windows are sealed shut, anxious as the critter scuttled past their offices and rested on window ledges. Witnesses say the maintenance staff tried helping it get down by pushing a few two-by-fours in its direction.

St Paul Animal Control have now placed a trap and some cat food on the roof, hoping to bring the raccoon down.

She said the animal is in good condition and is eating.

Not prepared to take a hint, it headed to the neighboring UBS tower - one of the tallest buildings in the city. At some point it began to descend, ever so slowly, but by the 17th floor decided against that route.

By 6:30 p.m., the hashtag was Twitter's No. 1 trending topic and was also popular on Instagram.

Whatever fate awaits the wild creature, it's now achieved whatever level of fame an animal hits when it gets multiple Twitter accounts.

A daredevil raccoon who put everyone on edge by scaling the giddy heights of a skyscraper is on top of the world after safely making it to the roof.

Onlookers and reporters tracked the critter's progress as it scaled the 25-storey UBS Tower.

There is not a whole lot that St. Paul Animal Control can do because a rescue mission would be too risky for both the raccoon and the workers.
