Hate the notch? You'll love the new Vivo Nex.

A pop-up camera? What will they think of Nex? We were expecting something more exciting from a top of the line smartphone, but perhaps its real-life performance will surprise us. The Nex builds on Vivo's Apex concept smartphone which features a pop-up selfie camera and true bezel-less design at the front. Vivo says that it has established AI joint laboratories with partners with an aim to provide a brand new user experience through AI intelligence.

While we all knew ditching bezels would continue to be a trend in 2018, many hoped that the notch wouldn't come along with that. Dubbed Ultra FullView, the display is a ginormous 6.59-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED unit, and while this might sound like a a lot, the device is similar in overall size to a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 - the Vivo NEX has dimension of 162×77×7.98mm and a total weight of 199gr. At the front there is a retractable 8MP front camera.

The earpiece has also been removed from its usual spot and has been replaced with a vibrating screen. Instead the company has a technology called Screen SoundCasting that turns the display itself into the loudspeaker so you can hear the person speaking on the phone. To further reduce the bezels, NEX adopts Vivo's 3rd generation In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology that has improved in both accuracy and speed, following its successes with the X20UD and X21.

Form and function can not be separated and in the ultimate bezel-less phone, the performance also needs to be optimal.

The phone has been launched in two versions - Vivo Nex S with Snapdragon 845 SoC and an affordable Vivo Nex A with Snapdragon 710.

Vivo has joined the ranks of phone makers that offer their own virtual assistant, with Jovi.

NEX incorporates AI technology that makes the smartphone truly smart. Nevertheless, the press release states that it's mainly used for taking better photos, with features like AI Scene Recognition, AI HDR, AI Filters and AI Photo Composition. This ensures users capture the flawless shot of any subject, in any scenario, regardless of skill level. Users can have Jovi open apps or identify objects on the phone screen, using either voice commands or a dedicated hardware button on the phone's side. In future, the company will be rolling out several new features related to this Jovi voice assistant.

As mentioned, the Vivo Nex and Nex Ultimate smartphones differ only in terms of chipset, RAM and storage. Still, you have to give mad props to Vivo for launching such a smartphone. The mid-end variant has the same specs as that of the highest-end variant except for the internal storage as it packs 128GB storage.
