It's just that way back in 2016, under the crushing weight of all those endless, self-serious superhero movies, the snarky, silly send-up of "Deadpool" was a refreshing tonic - essentially the "Scary Movie" of superhero movies.
Sorry, but genius it was not. Reynolds continues to do signature work here, and if you're a fan of his, this is another treat.
They're all great; it's the movie around them that comes up short. Deadpool argues that it doesn't count as a superpower, but she nearly manages to steal the film with it. Massive hits, of course, breed sequels nearly by necessity.
So, with two years to figure out what worked and what didn't, the sequel is better still, right?

Deadpool 2 is a highly entertaining and fun ride. I was like, 'What's going on?' It kind of worked perfectly because I am in the scene and so upset.

The original "Deadpool" caught lightning in a bottle. Personally, I had no great love for Atomic Blonde, but the action and fight sequences had a attractive flow to them.
However, for all the attention paid to the action and the star, so little is paid to the actual story. It's a movie that wallows in making sure you're clear about its movie-ness, which includes copious references to other movies-The Terminator, James Bond opening credits sequences, Say Anything, Basic Instinct, Green Lantern yet again-and self-deprecating allusions to its peripheral role in the wider X-Men universe. It is only after he goes to live with Colossus (Stefan Kapicic) and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) at the X-Men Mansion, that he finds a new motivation to do something for the world.
So, here we are at the dawn of the release of Deadpool 2. But it's Julian Dennison who threatens to steal the film in a part far bigger and more complex than the trailers would suggest. All of the characters are great, the standout being Zazie Beetz's Domino.

The teaser has shown the face of the villain character of the film Nathan Summers aka Cable. While Reynolds could have easily stepped aside and let the studio bring in a younger pop star, he had a more classic idea. But Deadpool still steals the show, even though it is his movie. "You actually have moments where you can reach beyond the screen and tickle the audience before the movie starts". For me, I just wish there was something there that justified the hype and adoration. Nothing can change the fact that it doesn't aspire to be something more.
