The podcast Serial was inspired by a documentary reality series about a mysterious death, and now the crime covered in Serial is becoming a documentary reality series.
"The series will explore the 1999 disappearance and murder of 18-year-old Baltimore County high school student Hae Min Lee, and the subsequent conviction of her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, a case brought to global attention by the hugely popular "Serial" podcast". No release date has been set but it will air on Sky Atlantic in the United Kingdom and HBO in the U.S. The series will re-examine the events that led up to Lee's 1999 murder and Sky says the series will present "ground-breaking revelations that challenge the state's case".
Sky and HBO will be making a new documentary series that focuses on Adnan Syed.
The Case Against Adnan Syed will be a four-hour documentary series that's directed by Academy Award nominee Amy Berg (Deliver Us from Evil, West of Memphis). According to a press release, producer Amy Berg has been given unprecedented access to those closest to the case - including Syed's family and friends, defence team, and members of the Baltimore City law enforcement.
Syed, who has maintained his innocence, was given a life sentence for Lee's murder in 2000.
NBCUniversal International Studios will distribute The Case Against Adnan Syed internationally.
The four-hour documentary will debut in Europe on Sky Atlantic and in the United States on HBO.
However, in March this year the Court of Special Appeals ruled to vacate his conviction and granted him a retrial. Now the series is getting a small screen followup, thanks to HBO and Sky.
The show will also feature original music from singer-songwriter Nick Cave.
They argue Syed's defense attorney did a thorough job and the witness, Asia McClain, would not have changed the outcome of the case.
