Hope all in Kashmir will reciprocate Centre's peace move: BJP

2000, Centre: On November 19, 2000, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government announced a unilateral ceasefire on the eve of Ramzan, which was implemented on November 28.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has expressed gratitude towards the Centre and thanked Prime Minister Narendra and Home Minister Rajnath Singh for declaring the ceasefire in the valley considering the holy month of Ramzan. The decision has been taken to help the peace loving Muslims observe Ramazan in a peaceful environment, a statement from the Ministry said. This unilateral ceasefire will be starting from Ramzan in mid-May till the completion of the Amarnath yatra in August.

The Centre's decision is a major development for the Kashmir Valley, which has seen prolonged unrest with dozens killed and hundreds injured in the last two months.

The state BJP unit had said no to the proposal later.

Madni said, it is in this belief about the democratic structure and centre's willingness to cooperate that Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti desired declaration of cease-fire and sought involvement of all political compositions to make this happen.

Omar Abdullah tweeted and said if the militants don't respond to the ceasefire move, they will stand exposed as the true enemies of the people.

In her message on the occasion, the Chief Minister hoped the holy month marks the beginning of an era of peace, free from bloodshed and acrimony.

After holding an all-party meeting in Srinagar, CM Mehbooba Mufti had announced that there was a consensus on asking the Centre to announce unilateral ceasefire in Kashmir. Security Forces to reserve the right to retaliate if attacked or if essential to protect the lives of innocent people. "They will take appropriate measures to ensure peace", he said. He said Holy month of Ramadan has given New Delhi a chance to focus on the promises made and deal with the situation in Kashmir through confidence building envisaging a spirit to own.

As regards pressure on terrorists, they said almost 65 terrorists were killed in the first four months this year in operations conducted round the clock.

Forward posts in the Siachen Glacier, and posts and formations along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) are now being stocked.
