The university updated the alert at about 6:45 a.m.to report the victim had died from his injuries.
The incident happened at around 10:30 p.m.at Binghamton University in upstate NY.
The university, part of the State University of NY, alerted students to the cancellation hours after an unidentified 19-year-old male freshman was stabbed to death on campus Sunday night. School officials say Souza was a freshman engineering student.
The victim was identified as a 19-year-old male who is a first-year student. "We are in the process of contacting them".
Faughnan said the police presence on the campus was increased following the stabbing, which he said is not believed to have been a "random act".
The suspected assailant remained at large. However, the Press & Sun-Bulletin in Binghamton reported that it occurred in Windham Hall, a residential building. "Any information that you have should be reported to BinghamtonU Police at 607-777-2393".
Several people have been interviewed overnight by investigators from multiple agencies, university officials said.
The University is offering a number of services for students, faculty and staff following the incident.
