Victory over Werdum, who was ranked third in the UFC's heavyweight division, can elevate Volkov, who sat at the seventh position coming to this bout, to the fight for the championship title. The 40-year-old Brazilian will make his 16 trip into the octagon, which will be a seventh headlining assignment. Volkov is on a five-fight win streak and a win over Werdum would certainly put him in the title hunt.
"Accident, but he punched me", Werdum tells TMZ Sports.
A year or two ago, it was trendy to say that the UFC's heavyweight division was dominated by ageing fighters who were at the tail-end of their prime. Since losing the heavyweight title to Stipe Miocic nearly two years ago, Werdum has rebounded to go 3-1 in his last four since the loss. I will wait for this. "In the end, the only thing I'm unhappy about is I had to finish him and hit him a couple of times while he was unconscious".
"It nearly knocked me down but it's good", Werdum said.
Amazingly, it was the second bout at UFC Fight Night that ended in the final second of the last round.
The Brazilian is one of the most fearsome grapplers ever to grace the UFC, with 11 career submissions to his name, and while he insisted that he wasn't tempted to retaliate against "Iron" Mike, he joked that he nearly dragged Tyson into his wheelhouse.
Werdum attempted a takedown that was seemingly was defended by Volkov, but it played right into Werdum's hands as he swept underneath and took the back. Although he is just a purple belt, Volkov has three submission victories on his record and will not be easy to get out on the ground.
Werdum's two-fight winning streak was snapped. The fight stalemated with both fighters beginning to exhaust, and Werdum's eyes began to swell shut about halfway through the round. In the co-main-event, a light-heavyweight rematch between London's own Jimi Manuwa and Poland's Jan Blachowicz will go down.
Werdum throws a leg kick and has a high kick blocked.
