Gunman 'on the loose' at Northwestern University campus as police respond to 'shots fired'

Students and Northwestern community members were informed of the incident through emergency phone and email alerts and told to shelter in place on the Evanston campus.

Police say a report of a gunman at Northwestern University proved false.

The incident is ongoing at at Northwestern University which says there is "a report of a person with a gun" on Evanston.

About 2:45 p.m., Evanston police called Studio SLK, a hair salon across the street from Engelhart Hall, to tell everyone to stay inside and away from the windows, according to the owner, Sandy Lewis-Kadiri. A person with a gun has been reported on the Evanston campus.

Speaking with reporters, Evanston Police Department Commander Ryan Glew indicated that the alert was investigated after someone had called officials around 2:17 p.m. local time and reported that he had shot his girlfriend near the graduate hall.

Lewis-Kadiri said she didn't hear any gunshots, but 'we can see the activity that's going on'.

Cops rushed to the Evanston campus amid reports that someone had opened fire inside the Englehart Hall residential building.
