Drew is cast as Cagney, an LAPD detective who's easygoing and nimble. Drew will star with Michelle Hurd (Law & Order: SVU, Blindspot) in Cagney & Lacey.

Cagney & Lacey was a trendsetter in many ways as it showed two entirely different characters - Cagney a single, career-minded woman, while Lacey a married mother - fight bad guys as New York City police detectives. Hurd's Lacey is described as athletic and polished, and a former high school track and field champion.

The original "Cagney and Lacy" (1981-88) featured Sharon Gless as Cagney after the first season and Tyne Daly as Lacy.

Bridget Carpenter will write and executive produce the "Cagney & Lacey" pilot, with CBS Television Studios producing along with MGM Television.

Drew's departure from "Grey's", along with longtime castmate Jessica Capshaw, came to light last week, when it was reported that producers did not renew their contracts due to the show's "creative direction". The two stars also shared six Lead Actress in a Drama Series trophies between them.

"Well, it's been quite a week", Drew tweeted alongside an article about her casting.

Drew, who plays April Kepner, will exit after nine seasons, eight as a series regular. She is repped by LINK Entertainment, Innovative Artists and attorney Alex Kohner.

Brushing aside the question of whether the world needs a "Cagney & Lacey" reboot, you could argue this is an upgrade for both actresses. Hurd's resume also includes roles on Netflix's Daredevil and Starz's Ash vs Evil Dead. Evil Dead, is with APA and TMT Entertainment Group.
