United States President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced the departure of his top diplomat Rex Tillerson, naming his successor current Central Intelligence Agency chief Mike Pompeo.

Trump last Friday asked Tillerson to step aside, and the embattled diplomat cut short his trip to Africa on Monday to return to Washington.

The former ExxonMobil CEO's nomination as head of the State Department passed a Senate panel by a 11-10 party line vote January 23.

Trump's Twitter Post: Mike Pompeo, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, will become our new Secretary of State.

Trump announced the removal of Tillerson on social media Tuesday morning. She would become the CIA's first female director. He will do a fantastic job! He added, "I want to thank Rex Tillerson for his service".

Pompeo is to be replaced at CIA by Gina Haspel, Pompeo's deputy at CIA, Trump tweeted.

Trump had not offered an explanation for the change at the time of the announcement.
