With a lot of support, Marshall preps for Wichita State in opening round of NCAA Tournament

Marshall Athletics invited the public to the Henderson Center Sunday evening to celebrate Herd men's hoops' Conference USA title and watch the selection show that determined the Thundering Herd's NCAA Tournament destiny in the opening round.

The Eagles are coached by Gregg Marshall, who was an assistant coach for the Herd under Mullens native Greg White from 1996-98. Plus, current WSU assistant Donnie Jones was an assistant under Billy Donovan and eventually took over as the Herd's head coach in 2007.

The victor will take on either No. 5 West Virginia or No. 12 Murray State on Sunday.

In four seasons in Huntington, Jones was 55-41.

Saturday's win over the Hilltoppers marked the first conference championship for the Herd since Marshall defeated Davidson, 66-64, in the Southern Conference championship on March 7, 1987. In addition to winning the C-USA Tournament, the Herd went on the road and upset then-No.

The Shockers were 24-6 (14-4 in-conference) in the regular season, and lost to the University of Houston in the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament. "That game should be played for West Virginians".

The game from San Diego State University's Viejas Arena will be televised on TNT.

Just before Marshall's selection was announced, West Virginia found out its opponent for the 2018 NCAA Tournament as well.

The game will be played at 1:30 p.m.

If both WVU and Marshall win Friday, they'll play each other in the NCAA Tournament's 2nd round. In a one-game scenario, any of those teams can trade baskets with them.

Sagaba Konate averages 10.8 points and a team-high 7.6 rebounds while also averaging 3.3 blocks per game. He has a record of 261-90 in 11 seasons with the Shockers, who will be making their seventh straight NCAA appearance, a run that includes a Final Four run in 2013.

Esa Ahmed is chipping in 10.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Terrell Miller, Jr., is also netting 14.7 points and grabbing a team-high 8.3 rebounds per game for the Racers.

Landry Shamet leads the Shockers with 15.0 points and slightly more than five assists per game.
