Moon has been trying to use the games as an opportunity to revive meaningful communication with North Korea after a period of diplomatic stalemate and eventually pull it into talks over resolving the global standoff over its nuclear program.

At the worldwide games the neighbouring countries are also set to have a single ice hockey squad - the first time the two nations have played on a team together. They could also see a performance by a visiting North Korean art troupe in Seoul before heading back to Pyongyang.
Speaking at his swearing in ceremony previous year, Moon said he would be willing to travel to Pyongyang "under the right conditions", adding that "for peace on the Korean Peninsula, I will do everything that I can do". The Olympics opened in a spirit of intense rapprochement on Friday as the two Koreas marched together. A North Korean art troupe also performed in Gangneung on February 8 2018 and will perform in Seoul on February 11 2018 before heading back home. Throw in there the accusations that South Korea has had to arrange huge payouts for past meetings, and that these earlier encounters, while certainly producing indelible images, have done little to slow North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons.
