Moon has been trying to use the games as an opportunity to revive meaningful communication with North Korea after a period of diplomatic stalemate and eventually pull it into talks over resolving the global standoff over its nuclear program.

U.S. President Donald Trump and the North Korean leadership traded insults as tensions rose.

According to the Associated Press, Pence did not have any interaction with Kim Yo Jong during Friday's festivities, held at PyeongChang Olympic Stadium. In January 1968, Kim Yo Jong's grandfather, founding North Korean president Kim Il Sung, sent a squad of North Korean commandos to Seoul who tried unsuccessfully to kill then-president Park Chung-hee.

He made it to the stage right after North and South Korea marched together behind the blue-and-white unification flag.

By weaving military threats in with a charm offensive, North Korea wants the worldwide community to acknowledge it as a nuclear power.

Moon's office says Kim's sister, Kim Yo Jong, came to the South as his special envoy.

Moon's desire to engage North Korea was in contrast to his US ally.

While Tokyo has not condemned recent talks between the two Koreas insofar as they concern participation in the Pyeongchang Games, it has also warned against North Korea's "smile diplomacy".

Additionally, Thomas Bach, the president of International Olympic Committee, revealed that there will actually be a special ceremony to re-distribute the medals that were awarded at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

At the worldwide games the neighbouring countries are also set to have a single ice hockey squad - the first time the two nations have played on a team together. They could also see a performance by a visiting North Korean art troupe in Seoul before heading back to Pyongyang.

Speaking at his swearing in ceremony previous year, Moon said he would be willing to travel to Pyongyang "under the right conditions", adding that "for peace on the Korean Peninsula, I will do everything that I can do". The Olympics opened in a spirit of intense rapprochement on Friday as the two Koreas marched together. A North Korean art troupe also performed in Gangneung on February 8 2018 and will perform in Seoul on February 11 2018 before heading back home. Throw in there the accusations that South Korea has had to arrange huge payouts for past meetings, and that these earlier encounters, while certainly producing indelible images, have done little to slow North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons.

Kim Yong-nam met South Korean president Moon Jae-in near Pyeongchang and the two posed for a photo, a scene that would have been unimaginable a month ago.

She is on a United States sanctions list over alleged links to human rights abuses in North Korea.
