Over a month after her former morning-show colleague Matt Lauer was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women, his former Today show co-host Katie Couric has opened up for the first time on her response to the news, saying in an interview that the alleged conduct "was not the Matt we knew".
The woman who submitted the complaint alleged Lauer began behaving inappropriately while in Russian Federation covering the Winter Olympics in 2014, according to NBC.
Women also told Variety that Lauer gave one female staff member a sex toy as a gift, adding a note describing how he wanted to use it on her. "Matt was a kind and generous colleague who treated me with respect", she continued.
Katie Couric has broken her silence over her former Today co-host Matt Lauer's firing amid sexual harassment and assault claims.
In her People interview, however, Couric dismissed the suggestion it was proof that she knew of Lauer's reputation.
Couric initially chose to remain quiet about the situation, writing on social media in December that "I will say something when I'm ready to".
'The whole thing has been very painful for me. In it, Couric says Lauer "pinches me on the ass a lot", a clip that went viral after Lauer's issues surfaced.
Still, the entire situation is "very upsetting" to Couric, and although she's still unsure how to fully process Lauer's actions, she's optimistic about the future of Today.
"The accounts I've read and heard have been disturbing, distressing and disorienting and it's completely unacceptable that any woman at the Today show experienced this kind of treatment", she told the magazine. "Thanks for your interest", Couric wrote on Instagram.
"Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed", Lauer said in a statement.
