Chandigarh stalking case: BJP leader's son Vikas Barala granted bail

Chandigarh stalking case Vikas Barala Varnika Kundu

Vikas Barala had allegedly stalked and attempted to kidnap Chandigarh-based DJ Varnika Kundu

Punjab and Haryana HC on Thursday granted bail to Haryana BJP chief Subhash Barala's son Vikas Barala in the Chandigarh stalking case. Subhash Barala promised co-operation of his son in the police probe and several pleas were made but a trial court rejected their plea for bail four times until he was finally given bail.

Barala and Kumar had allegedly started following Kundu in their SUV here at around 12.20 am on August 5 in Chandigarh. "The bail of Vikas Barala has been approved by Justice Lisa Gill", Barala's counsel Vinod Ghai said.

Vikas Barala and Ashish Kumar were arrested on August 9, 2017 after Varnika Kundu from Chandigarh narrated the harrowing experience she suffered by the duo on the night of August 4.

He alleged that at the time of registeration of the FIR, the woman's father and her counsel were present at the police station and there were chances that the entire story was manipulated.

Barala's counsel had sought a regular bail from the court, submitting that his client had been behind the bars for almost four months and should be granted bail. "If the court is fine with granting him bail then I am also fine with it", Varnika said.

According to a report inHindustan Times, call records proffered by Barala's lawyer showed Kundu wasn't in the city right before the incident on the intervening night of 4 August and 5 August past year. They were released on bail later as the police had booked them under bailable sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act.
