Woody Allen's 'Wonder Wheel' spins relentlessly but takes us nowhere

Dylan Farrow Rips Hollywood, Media for Ignoring Woody Allen Sex Misconduct Claims

Woody Allen's 'Wonder Wheel' spins relentlessly but takes us nowhere

The Los Angeles Times previously asked the 42-year-old actress about her thoughts on abuse allegations against Allen, but she played it coy.

In a 2014 article in the New York Times, Farrow claimed Allen abused her while she was just seven years old in the attic of their home.

In 2016, Farrow's brother Ronan, now the author of multiple New Yorker stories on Weinstein and his alleged victims, wrote an essay in The Hollywood Reporter about the alleged incident.

She noted that while many in showbusiness have been taken down over their accusations, Allen was able to release his latest film Wonder Wheel starring Winslet and Justin Timberlake last week.

There's been some hand wringing in the press over echoes of the filmmaker's own past scandals with Timberlake playing a sleazy writer who ditches Winslet for her stepdaughter, and Allen even seems to kid his most famous quote when a philosophical beatnik played by David Krumholtz announces, "the heart has its own hieroglyphics" as justification for all that follows. I remember them. She was distraught when I told her. (She also admits she's still hesitant to speak out herself, because Allen's affiliates tend to direct their attacks at her mother whenever the allegations resurface.) Later, she expresses her appreciation for actors like Jessica Chastain, who have gone on the record to say they would never work with him, and Ellen Page, who have expressed regret for having worked with him.

"I think on some level Woody is a woman", Winslet joked of Allen's continuous creation of memorable female roles. I'll even toss in a spoiler warning before we do, just in case you're of the belief that forewarning of the details of Wonder Wheel's plot might rob you of its minor pleasures. "He understands the female characters he creates exceptionally well".

She continued, "His female characters are always so rich and large and honest in terms of how they're feeling and he just knows how to write dialogue for them to communicate all that".

Woody Allen's adoptive daughter, Dylan Farrow, wants to know why. I'm an actor; he's a director. (It felt more like bad Arthur Miller to me, maybe "A View from the Ferris Wheel?") There's a generous reading of the movie going around suggesting that this all might be an intentionally lousy play penned by our novice narrator, but I'm not buying it. Now, Carolina's on the run from her abusive husband and his goombah gang, who are all rightfully anxious that she knows too much about their business. And who says "I've become consumed with jealousy" in the middle of an argument?

"Dylan Farrow's allegations against Woody Allen, which she first made 25 years ago, have been thoroughly examined by law enforcement officials and child welfare investigators".

The director Wednesday Soon-Yi Previn in 1997, a union that also garnered controversy, as Previn is the adopted daughter of Allen's ex-wife Mia Farrow.

Soon-Yi married in 1997 and are still together to this day.

The deliberately stagy "Wonder Wheel" jams these characters into that cramped apartment with the insane colors blasting in from outside, piling them all onto one another's last nerves for long, blowsy theatrical arguments while Mickey makes self-conscious references to Eugene O'Neill. No charges were ever filed, and the reason is simple: "because Woody Allen is innocent". "At the time of the alleged assault, he was in therapy for his conduct towards me", she writes. The system worked for Harvey Weinstein for decades.

In the months following the New York Times' bombshell report on Harvey Weinstein, Hollywood has been rocked by a wave of sexual misconduct allegations brought against other industry figures. On social media, the hashtag #MeToo exploded with millions women and men sharing stories of their own experiences with sexual harassment and sexual assault across a wide spectrum of fields.
