Spotify has revealed it's annual "Year in Music" list which shows "the top artists, albums, tracks and moments that made 2017 such an fantastic year for music fans".
His song "Shape of You" was also the most streamed song, with 1.4 billion streams, and his album "Divide" also the most streamed album, listened to a total of 3.1 billion times. The Chainsmokers rounded out the top five.
This isn't the first time Ed Sheeran has nabbed the much-coveted "most streamed artist" slot for a given year - he also hit top spot in 2014. "Congratulations to Ed on an fantastic achievement".
The Spotify lists will likely be a boost to Sheeran's confidence, after he was shut out of the major categories at the Grammy Award nominations, including album, song and record of the year.
Hip-hop star Drake came in second on Spotify in 2017 and rapper Kendrick Lamar was fourth, with R&B singer The Weeknd, a protégé of Drake, placing third. He is up for two gongs at the 2018 ceremony, however - Best Solo Pop Performance for Shape Of You and Best Pop Vocal Album for Divide.
