In a letter to government agencies, Ciaran Martin, the head of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has, without expressly naming Kaspersky Lab, warned such agencies not to choose "a Russia-based AV company" as doing so would put national security at risk.

Meanwhile, Barclays Bank has taken the decision to stop providing free Kaspersky Lab antivirus products to new customers as a precaution following the NCSC advice.

The National Cyber Security Centre - the UK's authority on cyber security and part of GCHQ claims that the Russian security software could be exploited by the Kremlin.

The House Science Committee is pushing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to reveal which agencies have not fully complied with deadlines in a broad effort to identify and remove all Kaspersky Lab products.

Kaspersky has regularly had to deny its links to the Kremlin, especially in the USA under Donald Trump's administration.

'The NCSC advises that Russian Federation is a highly capable cyber threat actor which uses cyber as a tool of statecraft.

Barclays previously offered all its customers free Kaspersky anti-virus software to protect their online and mobile banking services.

The United Kingdom followed suit with the US decision last week, barring Kaspersky software from its systems as well.

"It's very important to note that the NCSC is not encouraging consumers or businesses against using Kaspersky Lab software", the added.
