Foal Eagle and Key Resolve joint military drills may be postponed due to the measureThe Olympic Truce resolution was adopted in the UN General Assembly, calling for the cessation of all global conflict for the duration of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in February 2018.

"We welcome the North's participation in the Pyeongchang Olympic Games at any time in anticipation of North Korea's response to the peace on the Korean Peninsula and the peaceful development of Northeast Asia and the world".

The resolution was adopted with a bang of the gavel by Assembly President Miroslav Lajcak on Monday to loud applause. The United Nations General Assembly adopted an Olympic Truce resolution ahead of the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games, calling for the games to be an opportunity to promote peace on the Korean Peninsula. In a speech to the UN General Assembly, Kim, who is now serving as an honorary ambassador for the games, recalled the power of the Olympic spirit as she watched the opening ceremonies of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. "I strongly believe this is the spirit of the Olympic Games, and it represents the potential and the power of sport".

The resolution urges countries to give safe passage to all players, officers and officials participating in the Olympics, to have safe access and allow them to participate at the Games, as well as mobilising youth around the world for peace.

In late September, North Korea secured qualification for its first athletes at the Pyeongchang Olympics when figure skaters Ryom Tae-Ok and Kim Ju-Sik finished in the top six in a qualifying event in Germany.

The mountainous resort town of Pyeongchang is located just 50 miles (80 km) from the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea, the world's most heavily armed border.

The two-time Olympian added that she is confident that the upcoming Games "will be one of best platforms not only for transmitting this message but for sharing the Olympic spirit of peace for humanity with the entire world". Two others are the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. The Olympic Truce, which traces back to the Ekecheiria (a truce held during the Olympics in ancient Greece), has been an Olympic tradition since it passed the UN General Assembly in October 1993 and took force during the Lillehammer Winter Olympics the next year.

"With the Olympic Truce resolution, the United Nation General Assembly is creating the conditions for all athletes to compete in peace", Bach said in a statement released by the IOC.

The South Korean delegation to NY included Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Do Jong-hwan, Ambassador to the United Nations Cho Tae-yul and Ambassador for Public Diplomacy Park Enna, who engaged in events promoting the PyeongChang Olympics.

The Ministry made the call following the United Nations' adoption of the Olympic Truce resolution in New York City yesterday. The South Korean government has reportedly looked into whether the suspension of North Korea's nuclear weapons and missile activity and the reduction of the South Korea-US joint military exercises could be a starting point for dialogue on the North Korean nuclear issue.

"If we can harmonise with each other, it will be a new beginning of peace on the Korean peninsula".
