Giants owner John Mara vows support for coach Ben McAdoo

A 51-17 loss to the Rams last week followed by another meltdown against a rebuilding 49ers team led by rookie quarterback C.J. Beathard likely sealed McAdoo's fate, and quite possibly Reese's as well.

After essentially forcing Tom Coughlin out the door after the 2015 season, Reese was given the green light to spend $200 million in free agency to bring defensive tackle Damon Harrison, defensive end Olivier Vernon and cornerback Janoris Jenkins to the team.

And so, the 49ers traded their 2018 second round pick for Garoppolo and everyone assumed he would be starting in order to start a potential 49ers turnaround.

Much was made of the fact that beloved Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was active for the first time in 672 days on Sunday as his team took on the Washington Redskins. Then Garoppolo didn't play against the 49ers, which was unusual but still understandable after just a week and a half.

"It never was the plan", Shanahan said. "I don't have a plan yet".

"As I told you guys, I'm taking it week-by-week". "I'm glad that we were able to get him the ball, especially on a day like today for him".

What was the point of trading for Jimmy Garoppolo if you aren't going to play the man? Beathard will start again Sunday. And it was little more than Kyle Shanahan deserved in the early stages of his rebuild in California. After a week of rest, one would think Beathard would be fine.

Co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch offered a reprieve on Monday, indicating in a statement less than 24 hours after a 31-21 loss to the previously winless 49ers that no changes would be made until after the season.

I asked the the Giants player if he wanted to go on the record. I didn't know it'd take this long, but it was special with the guys. I'm 26, and apart from two starts, I haven't had a chance to test myself as a starting quarterback.

49ers players rushed the football 33 times for a season-high 186 yards and two touchdowns. "We didn't come out (with a) win, so I'm not very happy about that".

As we expected, the Cowboys were badly hurt by the absence of a superstar on Sunday night as they fell to a 27-7 defeat at the hands of the Atlanta Falcons. Yes, the 49ers may franchise him but as is the case with Kirk Cousins and the Washington Redskins, that isn't a successful long-term strategy for player or team.

Remember, too, the Giants are nearly certain to have a very high draft pick, and there's a good chance they will take a quarterback with that selection.
