His final involvement in the game was a telling one, however, as he produced a clearing header on his own line to keep out a goal-bound effort from Leroy Sane.

This is not the first time that something like this has happen with Phil Jones, with the defender returning injured after the last worldwide break.

England boss Gareth Southgate quickly played down the severity of Jones' injury following the goalless draw, but ruled him out of the clash with Brazil at Wembley on Tuesday.

Manchester United has suffered another possible injury blow as defender Phil Jones had to be replaced after just 25 minutes during an global friendly.

Jones was taken off in the 25′ and replaced by Liverpool's Joe Gomez, who made his Three Lions debut. "Mainly due to Phil carrying something", Southgate stated at his post-match press conference.

United had been handed an injury boost with the likes of Marcos Rojo, Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all making good progress in their respective rehab programmes, but Jones could now find himself back on the treatment table to compound Mourinho's troubles.

He said: "He seems fine, we've checked him out".

Jones has struggled with fitness issues throughout his career, but has been an important figure for the Red Devils this season.

But Southgate is unsure if Jones will stay on with the national side or return to Old Trafford.

However, the Portuguese boss will be buoyed by the fact Paul Pogba, Marcos Rojo and Michael Carrick are all due back after the worldwide break.
