Mumbai: Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi will present his film Beyond the Clouds on the opening day of this year's International Film Festival of India, to be held from November 20-28 in Goa. The film, which stars Shahid Kapoor's younger brother Ishaan Khatter, will be showcased at the "48th International Film Festival of India". A lot, if popular Marathi filmmaker Ravi Jadhav's new film Nude is anything to go by. Naturally, the IB Ministry had chose to override the jury decision, without consulting the jury members.
The jury apparently got to know of the changes from an email sent to them by the Directorate of Film Festivals (DFF), under the information and broadcasting ministry, informing them about the films that would be shown in the Indian Panorama section. Malayalam film S Durga, screened at the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, is a dark social commentary that is narrated in an engaging manner. A jury member said one of them had apprehended that the authorities could object to Nude and Sexy Durga for their titles and had suggested adding two films as alternatives. Sasidharan, who directed S Durga, told Mirror that he had heard that his film had made it to the final list, but was unsure of it being screened.
"Iranian Director Majid Majidi's first Indian film "Beyond the Clouds" is set to open at #IFFI2017", Irani, the information and broadcasting minister, said in a tweet. Some jury members and the director of Sexy Durga said the films could have been dropped merely due to their names and that the content had nothing controversial. The jury was headed by Kahaani director Sujoy Ghosh and, besides Desai and Narain, consisted of Sachin Chatte, Suresh Heblikar, Rahul Rawail, Gyan Correa, Satarupa Sanyal, Nishikant Kamat, Merlvin Mukhim, Nikkhil Advani, Apurva Asrani, and Hari Viswanath.
A total of 16 films, including "Fireflies in the Abyss", which won the Best Non-Feature Film Award this year, figure in the non-feature film category.
