Chances of Detroit Luring Amazon HQ? Very Low, Analysts Say

Canada Is So, So Thirsty For Amazon's New Office

Amazon primer: Detroit to submit HQ2 bid today

A number of cities are in the running for the second headquarters and the City of Las Vegas is one of those vying for the HQ.

The MEDC is playing a supporting role for two separate MI proposals from Detroit and Grand Rapids, but not taking sides, Guerrant said.

A coalition of Bay Area cities - Concord, Fremont, Oakland, Richmond and San Francisco - submitted a joint bid, offering numerous sites around the Bay Area where the Seattle company could build another home.

"Whether it's Fort Wayne, or Jeffersonville, or Gary, or places in between throughout our state, I'm really proud of the work that's occurred in three different regions, in northwest Indiana, here in central Indiana and down in southeast Indiana", Holcomb said.

Gary officials are promoting the city and the surrounding northwestern IN area's proximity to Chicago, access to available land and Indiana's "pro-business environment" with lower taxes than IN IL.

Other cities around the country are getting creative.

A southern Arizona development group delivered a 21-foot cactus to Amazon, trying to woo the company to Tucson, Arizona.

Gary could have a strong chance to get Amazon's attention, McDermott said, and the city has the necessary acreage, room for growth and an airport.

The city took out an ad in the New York Times for a letter to Jeff Bezos, Amazon's CEO. The mayor said the city is backing the bid assembled by Gary and the Northwest Indiana Forum as well.

We did reach out to the Mayor's office for comment, but so far haven't heard back.

Housing site Apartment List found that the flood of Amazon employees to Seattle has coincided with rent increases that surpass the rates of nearly all other US cities and the fastest growth rate nationwide in home prices.

"We'll treat these like every package we submit", Holcomb said. You can't put a price tag on that, although you could say that if you fly over IN, it's going to cost you money.

Proposals are due Thursday for interested cities. In the meantime, IN officials will be waiting patiently.

The company behind Detroit's campaign, Bedrock Detroit, said in a statement, in part: "We wanted to share something created to go along with that bid that shows Detroit's vision for the future...the entire region came together to join forces and collaborate to show the world that Detroit was made to move".
