Harshita Dahiya, a Haryanvi singer who specialised in folk songs was shot dead on Tuesday as she was returning home to Delhi after a performance at a village in Haryana's Panipat, around 86 km away.
The incident took place around 4.30 p.m.
There were three other people with her in the auto when two men stopped them and shot her.
The men demanded that the driver and Harshita Dahiya's two companions, including another singer, step out of the auto.
Dahiya, 22-years-old, a resident of Nahra-Nahri village of Haryana's Sonipat, was presently living in Narela of Delhi.
Sources said that the singer has told her friends that she has received death threats.
She was shot five-six times from close range while she was coming back in a vehicle from Chamrara village in Israna block of Panipat, police said.
The report added that Harshita was a witness to the killing of her mother a few months ago in Delhi. However, it is not yet known whether she had informed police about the potential threat to her life.
The police have registered a case of murder against unknown people and said that an investigation is underway.
