Former Penn State LB NaVorro Bowman released by the San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers are apparently in business, and are shopping former All-Pro and defensive captain Navorro Bowman, who has been with the team the past eight seasons.

With the emergence of rookie inside linebacker Reuben Foster, Bowman had become expendable for the 49ers.

"During that time, NaVorro was a key component of one of the best teams in the league and his passion for the game allowed him to quickly become a favourite of our faithful fans".

It appears that All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman may not be in the Bay Area much longer, at least in red and gold colors. "We wish him and his family great success". Bowman also led the team in tackles in four of the previous six seasons (2011-13, 2015).

In 2016, he started in each of the team's first four games where he registered 35 tackles, two passes defensed, one interception, one sack and one forced fumble before he was placed on the Injured Reserve List on October 6, 2016.

Bowman missed the entire 2014 season after suffering a gruesome leg injury in the 2013 NFC Championship Game loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

While this is a little shocking, it is not the strangest thing to see a rebuilding team ship out aging assets in favor of developing young players.

"I think it's a fair question, especially when you're 0-5", Shanahan said. He appeared in only four contests previous year after tearing his Achilles tendon in early October. Rapoport cites Bowman's injury history and large base salary as barriers to the trade. [Bowman's agent] Drew [Rosenhaus] spoke to me on Monday night and indicated his frustration on behalf of NaVorro and I told him I had talked with Kyle and his staff and that we were convicted. I don't like it.

Trying to piece a competitive defense together while undergoing a rebuild, the Colts signed a handful of players on one-year deals.
