A speeding Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) allegedly in possession of a local Shiv Sena leader mowed down three school girls in Baramati tehsil. All the five suspects had fled the spot after the accident. Locals allege that the vehicle belongs to a local Shiv Sena leader, Pappu Mane, who was allegedly indulging in rash driving.

Police added that two girls died in the incident while the third survived the dash with critical injuries.

"There were three to four people inside the auto when the accident took place, but Mane was not inside the SUV".

A group of angry local people set the SUV on fire and blocked the road to press for action against the Sena leader.

"According to our investigation, there were three to four people inside the vehicle when the accident took place, but Mane was not inside the SUV".

The deceased girls, identified as Samiksha Vitkar (13) and Divya Pawar (12), were on their way to school when they were knocked down by the auto. A police officer from Baramati taluka police station said, "The investigation is still on whether Mane was behind the wheel".

The arrested trio are identified as Akash Jagtap, Hrishikesh Chavadhar, and Prithviraj Chavan, all residents of Baramati.

They managed to nab the driver of the auto who was later handed over to police.

Mane along with another person who was sitting in the auto fled from the scene soon after the accident.
